Chris Norman
Redcar, England · born 1950 · 1964 – present
Born Christopher Ward Norman on 25 October 1950 in Redcar, North Yorkshire, Chris Norman first gained international prominence as the original lead singer of Smokie, the band he fronted from 1964 to 1986. Smokie's run of 1970s hits — produced by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn — made them one of the most recognisable soft-rock acts in Europe.
In 1978 Norman duetted with Suzi Quatro on “Stumblin’ In”, a worldwide top-10 hit that became a career-defining moment. After leaving Smokie he pursued a solo career that proved especially strong in Germany, Eastern Europe and the Baltic states, where he has retained a fiercely loyal audience to the present day.
Now in his seventh decade on stage, Norman continues to tour and record, blending Smokie anthems with solo hits and more recent original material. His instantly recognisable, slightly rasped baritone remains at the centre of a tight band show that bridges the original 1970s sound and contemporary arrangements.
